Georgia No. 1 for women-owned biz growth

The Peach State leads the nation in growth of number of women-owned businesses in the past 15 years and Atlanta was also ranked high, according to the yearly American Express OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses Report.

The Peach State leads the nation in growth of number of women-owned businesses in the past 15 years and Atlanta was also ranked high, according to the yearly American Express OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses Report.

Georgia saw 94.7 percent growth of number of women-owned firms and was 27th in the nation with 64.2 percent growth of firm revenue from 1997 to 2012. There are now an estimated 283,400 women-owned firms in the state that generate $41.5 billion in annual revenue.

Atlanta was ranked No. 5 among American metros with 44.3 percent growth of number of women-owned firms and 12th with 38.5 percent growth of firm revenue. The area has about 179,000 women-owned firms that generate $29 billion in annual revenue.

Nationally, the number of women-owned businesses has increased by 54 percent to 8,345,600 since 1997.
